Building a brighter future for children and young adults
New Dawn Guatemala has made a commitment to fully fund the education of 30 youth and young adults from Nuevo Amanecer and the surrounding area each year. Since 2013, the organization has provided over $14,000 in tuition assistance for youth who otherwise would have little alternative to low wage, back-breaking work in the coffee and banana fields.
In November of 2015, New Dawn funded four youth (two male and two females) to participate in a fundraising course offered by Guatemalan-based non-profit Entre Mundos. The six-day course provided classes in fundraising, economic development publicity, and capacity building, giving these individuals skills that are critical for generating methods for directly supporting their communities.
$222 will send a child to school for a YEAR!
These scholarships are only possible because of your generous support. Please help us continue to fund these remarkable students!
A Clean, Reliable Source of Clean Water
Success! New Dawn Guatemala was recently awarded a $2,500 grant from the Seattle International District Rotary Club Foundation to solve the community's intermittent water supply problem.
Throughout its short history, Nuevo Amanecer has struggled to find a sustainable solution to its inadequate water supply. A clean, reliable water supply is necessary for any community's health and development. As such, it can be one of the trickiest problems for a poor, rural community to solve.
The grant will fund critical improvements to the existing well and installing a new water pump, ultimately increasing the community's water supply by an additional 5000 gallons per day.
Connecting Humans and Communities in Solidarity
We support Nuevo Amanecer’s efforts to preserve and strengthen their unique cultural heritage by supporting local festivals and promoting ongoing links between the people of Nuevo Amanecer and Seattle via yearly delegations, and ongoing connections between people in our two regions.
Since 2013 we have provided annual funding each May to the Mother’s Day celebration which honors the contribution of mothers to their children’s education. We have also supported the community’s yearly anniversary celebration ever July which commemorates the founding of the community in 1998 after the town’s founders had to flee Guatemala in fear and spend years in difficult exile. It also includes special foods, dances and athletic events and culminate in a large “noche cultural” involving the whole community and people for other towns. Another yearly event we help fund is the Virgin of Guadalupe celebration every December 12, which honors the Virgin that the community believes helped guide them back to Guatemala after painful years in Chiapas Mexico. Finally we support the yearly Toys for Kids event which provide a toy for every child up to age 7.
Members of our board and other supporters travel to Nuevo Amanecer every year to assess how the projects we fund are doing, learn more about community needs, and strengthen our people to people connections. We have established links between faith and women’s groups in the two areas and look forward to strengthening our human connections as we continue to work in solidarity with our partners in Nuevo Amanecer. We have also worked together with the community to establish a solidarity visitors program in which supportive people can stay there, learn more about the community and help contribute to their economic development.
