Celebrate the 17th Anniversary of Nuevo Amanecer, Guatemala

8/9/2015

When: Sunday, Aug. 9th 2015, 3-6PM
Where: 6815 Ravenna Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98109

Come and share an afternoon of stories, food and music on behalf of the brave ex-refugee community of New Dawn (Nuevo Amanecer) Guatemala and celebrate the community's 17th anniversary. Help our totally volunteer non- profit complete our commitment to the people of Nuevo Amanecer to provide 34 scholarships this year for youth who otherwise could not afford to attend school.(see www.newdawnguatemala.org for more info).

Music will include the Luis Martinez trio, featuring folk and pop music from Latin American and the U.S.

Residents of Nuevo Amanecer were driven from their homes by the violence of their government (supported by US funding and training) during the 1980s and 1990s. Many lived up to 15 years in Mexican refugee camps as a result.

In 1998, once conditions had improved in Guatemala, Nuevo Amanecer's residents banded together in Mexican refugee camps, bravely returned back to their home country, and founded their new community. Made up of about 60 families, Nuevo Amanecer is organized around the same principles of social justice, democracy, and gender equity that caused many of the community's members to suffer persecution years ago.

To learn more about the valiant people of Nuevo Amanecer and how you can support them in their struggle for social justice and ecological resilience, please visit our web site at www.newdawnguatemala.org.
