When: Thursday, Jun. 5th 2014, 6-9PM Where: Five Hooks Fish Grill 2232 Queen Anne Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109
This great new seafood restaurant has graciously offered to give us 20% of all the proceeds from dinner and drinks. Music will include Fandangueros de Seattle, which features traditional acoustic instruments and singing from Mexico, and the Luis Martinez trio, featuring folk and pop music from Latin American and the U.S.
All proceeds will go to benefit scholarships and job training for high school students and young adults in the ex -refugee community of New Dawn, (Nuevo Amanecer ) Guatemala who otherwise could not afford to study. New Dawn residents were driven from their homes by the government sponsored violence (supported by US funding and training) during the 1980s and 1990s and many lived up to 15 years in Mexican refugee camps.
In 1998, once conditions had improved in Guatemala, they banded together in Mexican refugee camps, bravely returned back to their home country, and founded their new community. Made up of about 60 families, New Dawn is organized around the same principles of social justice, democracy, and gender equity that caused many of the community's members to be persecuted years ago.
